The Power of Perseverance

Big Sur SmallI have known people that have given up on a dream - losing weight, competing in a race, earning a degree - not because they weren't capable, but because they had trouble showing up, day after day.  They wanted a magic pill or quick fix that would help them acheive a great result.  These people are often super busy, having many good activities on their plate at a given time.  But for many of them, the long game is difficult to choose.  Inspiration comes easy.  It's the perspiration that's difficult!

There are a few tricks that can help when you need to work on persistance.  Here are my best thoughts on the subject:

  • Just show up.  That might sound simplistic, but it has worked for me more times than I can count.  You don't have to be the best.  You don't even have to be having a good day.  You just show up.
  • Don't try to figure it all out.  Some people give up because they can't see how it will all work out in the end.  Mind you, I think visualization is terrific, but focus on the results you want, not how you will acheive them.
  • Focus on the next step.  Remember the quote by Lau Tzu - "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."  I would say that applies to any difficult task.  Just take one step at a time.  Small wins will add up and you will discover that you can do more than you possibly could ever imagine.
  • Remember your why.  If you know why you are doing something, the how becomes much easier.  Keep your reasons front and center and you will win.

Hang in there!  We know you can acheive your desires with a little persistance.

Here's to staying the course!

Great advice. As Bruce Lee always said : “You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”
